Maldives To Launch Nationwide Mosquito-Control Campaign

MALE, Dec 27 (NNN-PSM) – The Maldivian government will launch a nationwide programme, to control mosquito populations, following the recent discovery of Filariasis cases in the country, local media reported, yesterday.

Maldivian health authorities, identified over 30 foreign nationals who tested positive for Filariasis, during the recent medical screening camps, according to the report.

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, said, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, and the Ministry of Defence, Waste Management Corporation, the Maldives Police Service, and the Maldives National Defence Force will join the campaign, which would commence next week.

The last reported case of Filariasis in the country was in 2004.

In 2016, the country was certified to have eliminated the disease as a public health problem by the World Health Organisation.– NNN-PSM
