Two Dead, Two Missing After Boat Sank In Eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, Dec 23 (NNN-ANTARA) – Rescuers have found most of the victims who had been missing since Wednesday, after their boat capsized off the coast of Mamuju regency, in the eastern Indonesian province of West Sulawesi, a local search and rescue official told local media, yesterday.

The Mamuju Search and Rescue Agency reported that 33 people survived the incident with two killed and the other two still missing.

The agency has revised the total number of victims after its earlier report issued on Thursday that said a total of 28 went missing in the incident taking place near Ambo Island.

The agency chief, Muhammad Rizal, told local media that a joint rescue team has expanded its search operations to find the two missing.

“The victims were not wearing life jackets, so it is difficult for us to calculate the search area for the victims swept away by the current,” he said.

The chartered boat, carrying wedding guests departed from Ambo Island on Wednesday at around 10:00 a.m. local time and was expected to arrive at its destination of Sumare village, in Mamuju at 4:00 p.m. It capsized after being hit by a strong wave.– NNN-ANTARA
