LIMA, Dec 19 (NNN-ANDINA) — Pres Dina Boluarte re-iterated that Peru, as a consultative member of the Antarctic Treaty, is committed to the preservation of Antarctica.
“Our future is inseparable from the future of Antarctica. It is our duty and it is urgent to preserve it. Peru, as a consultative member to the Antarctic Treaty, is committed to this purpose,” she stated.
Her remarks were delivered during the departure ceremony of the oceanographic research vessel BAP Carrasco to embark on the 30th Scientific Campaign of Peru to Antarctica.
Moreover, she mentioned that the changes occurring in the Antarctica do not just affect said continent, but its impact is global in scope.
In this regard, she pointed out that scientific research in Antarctica sheds light on its connection with events affecting the Peruvian territory such as El Niño or La Niña phenomena, productivity of oceans, and thaw in mountains.
Boluarte emphasized that the first scientific expedition of Peru to Antarctica was launched in 1981, under the command of Captain Jorge Brousset Barrios.
Among the achievements of this first trip was the selection of the place for the construction of the Machu Picchu Antarctic Scientific Base (ECAMP), which was established a year later.
The president congratulated and thanked all expedition members, who under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the valuable support of armed institutes and the Ministry of Defense, make this year’s expedition possible.
“I declare the 30th Scientific Expedition of Peru to Antarctica officially underway. I wish our sailors and expedition members a safe journey and successful mission,” she remarked. — NNN-ANDINA
