Sri Lanka To Continue Importing Eggs To Meet Demand During Festive Season

COLOMBO, Dec 16 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka will continue to import eggs early 2024, to meet the demand for the coming Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations in Apr, a minister said, yesterday.

Following a meeting with Sri Lankan egg producers, Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security, Nalin Fernando told reporters that the demand for eggs spikes during the festive seasons.

The minister said that, egg producers are unable to deliver adequate quantities at the controlled price imposed by the government.

He said, the price of eggs has been rising in the past few weeks as the Christmas and New Year season nears.

Sri Lanka’s daily egg requirement stands at seven million pieces, with approximately six million eggs being supplied daily, leaving a shortage of around one million per day, Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Amaraweera, told media earlier.– NNN-XINHUA
