LIMA, Dec 15 (NNN-ANDINA) — The United Nations (UN) Office in Peru provides support to the Peruvian State in the face of an eventual El Niño phenomenon, through risk monitoring activities, technical assistance, and joint response planning.
The work is carried out through UN agencies, funds, and programs, which contribute to the monitoring of hydrometeorological and humanitarian indicators, as well as food insecurity and hunger.
The assistance is also reflected in the preparation and review of regulatory and technical documents, strengthening capacities in key sectors.
Likewise, humanitarian assistance is provided to the most vulnerable populations, in conjunction with national and sub-national authorities.
Moreover, it was reported that UN Resident Coordinator in Peru Igor Garafulic led the humanitarian project closure mission in the regions of Piura and Lambayeque.
In these regions, six entities within the United Nations System in Peru implemented initiatives to provide aid to about a quarter of a million people affected by rains and floods.
Within this context, US$7 million was released from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund. In addition, meetings were held with regional governments of Lambayeque and Piura.
“In the presence of an imminent impact of El Niño phenomenon, it is important to redouble efforts to strengthen preparation at all levels, prioritize the required assistance, and build greater resilience in homes, communities and institutions,“ Garafulic said.
Similarly, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provided assistance to farmers in the districts of Illimo, Jayanca, Pacora, and Morrope in Lambayeque region.
In turn, the United Nations Population Fund created 13 safe spaces for women and girls in the regions of Lambayeque, Piura, and Tumbes, where 506 cases of gender violence were handled.
For its part, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) mobilized nearly US$2.5 million in a multi-sector intervention to ensure the rights of children in the regions of Tumbes, Piura, and Lambayeque.
Additionally, the International Organization for Migration assisted 21,398 people with the delivery of hygiene, home, psychosocial, home repair, and debris cleaning kits. — NNN-ANDINA
