DUBAI (UAE), Dec 13 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peru marks a new milestone in climate action at the 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP28), held in Dubai, by signing a new memorandum of understanding with Italy, the Peruvian Ministry of Environment (Minam) has reported.
This document will allow for implementing measures of mitigation and adaptation to climate change, as well as ensuring the promotion of sustainable development and guaranteeing compliance with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
Peruvian Environment Minister Albina Ruiz stressed that “this memorandum offers us the opportunity to generate prosperity and well-being for our nations. Both countries today benefit and consolidate as climate action leaders, within the framework of this Summit.”
In turn, Italian Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto underscored the long-standing collaborative work between both nations aimed at boosting joint actions that contribute to adopting urgent measures so as to confront the climate crisis.
In 2016, Peru and Italy signed a memorandum with similar characteristics, through which the IMELS project for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change was implemented, thanks to which the Inventory of Glaciers and Lagoons of Glacier Origin was updated.
Similarly, the first National Inventory of Wetlands was developed. The risk estimate for hydrographic basins of the coast and the Amazon with emphasis on coffee and cocoa was crafted, and six investment projects in the territory were drawn up, among others.
This memorandum of understanding once again represents an opportunity to access the implementation of joint activities, projects, and programs; as well as the promotion of the development and strengthening of capacities, technology transfer, and technical assistance in climate action, Minam stated. — NNN-ANDINA
