LIMA, Dec 13 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Peruvian Government made an appeal to the population asking for calm and confidence in the face of an eventual El Niño phenomenon, noting that prevention works are being implemented to handle the worst scenario that may arise.
Defense Minister Jorge Chavez called on Peruvians to be clear on the fact that, for five months now, the Government has been working to prevent the consequences of eventual heavy rains that usually occur during the above-mentioned climate event.
“We call for calm and confidence from the population, since the Government is undertaking the works that have never been carried out,“ he said at a press conference held at the headquarters of the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN).
Chavez affirmed that this is the first time that the Government creates a multisectoral prevention plan to deal with El Niño.
Moreover, he noted that cleaning and clearing works in streams and riverbeds had not been undertaken since 2017.
The government official emphasized that these works are intended to enable rain water to pass through without interruption, thus preventing overflowing, which affects population centers.
On the other hand, the minister underscored that mechanical equipment for this type of work has not been acquired in 20 years.
Said situation has been corrected this time, by deploying 800 pieces of machinery to various parts of the country to attend to the emergency before, during and after it occurs. — NNN-ANDINA
