Pakistan To Step Up Efforts To Eradicate Polio: PM

ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (NNN-APP) – Pakistani Prime Minister, Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, said yesterday that, the government has been stepping up efforts to eliminate polio, and resuming regular polio immunisation campaigns across the country.

“The crippling disease (polio), which has been eradicated from the globe, still exists in Pakistan … Recent report of polio cases in Pakistan is concerning,” the prime minister said, while chairing a meeting on the Task Force on Polio Eradication.

He said that, emergency polio eradication plans and integrated programmes are being formulated and launched in high-risk areas of the country, emphasising that, polio vaccination campaigns would be monitored by using modern technology.

Terming the polio vaccine vital for the health, growth and future of children, Kakar highlighted that, all segments of the society needed to play their role in polio eradication.

People from all walks of life, including teachers, scholars and parents, must play their role in raising awareness on polio eradication, he added.

Last week, a new poliovirus case was detected in north-west Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, raising this year’s tally of disease-infected cases to six, according to the Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination.– NNN-APP
