PETALING JAYA, Malaysia, May 13 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Al-Azhar University has been working towards meeting the challenges of extremist thinking and terrorism that destabilise countries and does a disservice to Muslims with its support of the concept of “Al-Wasatiyyah” or moderation.
President of the World Organisation for Al-Azhar Graduates Malaysia (WOAG), Dr Mohd Fakhrudin Abdul Mukti, said the concept of moderation is in line with the Quranic teachings for an open and tolerant society, and this will be especially applicable in a plural society such as Malaysia.
“Al-Wasatiyyah also calls for the adoption of values such as embracing simplicity, and we are working at strengthening the implementation of this concept in Malaysia through uploading talks, articles, and translations of Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh’s statements into Malay, on the WOAG website,” he added.
Mohd Fakhrudin stated these points in his speech at an iftar dinner held at WOAG headquarters, here, on Sunday.
Also present at the event was Deputy Ambassador of Egypt, Ahmed Fawzi Elsherif; First Counsellor of Embassy of the State of Palestine in Malaysia, Sufyan Al-Khalidi; Assistant Religious Attaché for the Embassy of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Syeikh Abdulrahman Ibrahim Al-Robian; and several local religious figures.
The iftar, organised by WOAG and supported by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), was held to mark the 1,079th founding anniversary of Al-Azhar University.
