JAKARTA, Nov 22 (NNN-ANTARA) – A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s eastern province of North Maluku today, yet did not cause giant waves, the country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.
The earthquake occurred at 09:48 a.m. Jakarta time (0248 GMT), with its epicentre situated at 68 km north-west of West Halmahera Regency in the sea, with a depth of 109 km, the agency said.
The tremors were also felt in a nearby province of North Sulawesi, it revealed. The agency did not issue a warning for a tsunami as the tremors would not trigger giant waves.
Indonesia, an archipelagic nation, has been frequently stricken by earthquakes for its location on a vulnerable quake-jolted area called “the Pacific Ring of Fire.”– NNN-ANTARA
