BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Nov 22 (NNN-ANN) – Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC), highlighted the necessity for enhanced female representation in sports, including in executive committees in associations and federations.
Prince Sufri shared findings from a recent BDNOC research, which revealed a concerning lack of female participation in sports, the local daily Borneo Bulletin reported, yesterday.
During his remarks, at the 2023 Women in Sports Seminar, held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Prince Sufri said that, the IOC guidelines recommend a minimum of 30 percent female representation.
He added that, despite having 34 percent female athletes among the country’s 1,022 recorded athletes, there remains a need for intensified efforts to achieve gender equality in sports.
Themed “Toward a Gender-Balanced Eco-System in Brunei Sports,” the 2023 Women in Sports Seminar spanned two days, and focused on encouraging female athlete participation, while advocating for increased representation of women in decision-making roles within sports organisations.- NNN-ANN
