Indonesia Braces For Surge In Travel During Christmas-New Year Holiday Season

JAKARTA, Nov 21 (NNN-ANTARA) – The Indonesian government said yesterday that, it was expecting a more than 100 percent increase in the number of people travelling nationwide, during this year’s Christmas and New Year holidays.

The country’s Transportation Minister, Budi Karya Sumadi, said that, around 107.63 million people will travel across cities, provinces or islands, during the long holiday seasons, or 143.65 percent higher than 44.17 million travelling, during last year’s year-end holiday.

“So, the increase is very significant, above 100 percent. Most of them are predicted to travel to tourist sites for vacations. The rest is for exodus, or going to their hometowns, which also have tourist destinations, to celebrate Christmas,” Sumadi said in a statement.

He added that, usually, in every holiday season, the top five provinces visited were East Java, Central Java, West Java, North Sumatra and Yogyakarta.

With the predicted number of movements to tourist sites and the considerable use of private cars and motorcycles, Sumadi said, the government was preparing some measures to minimise traffic congestion, in coordination with the local government and traffic police.– NNN-ANTARA
