Moderate Earthquake Rocks Off Eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, Nov 17 (NNN-ANTARA) – A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s eastern province of Papua today, the country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The earthquake happened at 10:02 a.m. Jakarta time (0302 GMT), with its epicentre situated 29 km south-east of Sarmi Regency, on land, and a depth of 22 km, the agency reported.

There was not any potential for giant waves caused by the tremors, so no tsunami warning was issued by the agency.

Indonesia, an archipelagic nation, has been frequently stricken by earthquakes for its location on a vulnerable quake-jolted area called “the Pacific Ring of Fire.”– NNN-ANTARA
