BELGRADE, May 12 (NNN-BERNAMA-dpa) — Several people were injured Saturday in violent clashes between police and anti-government protesters in Albania, local media reported.
Thousands of demonstrators had assembled outside the parliament in the capital Tirana to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and fresh elections.
Some protesters threw firecrackers and Molotov cocktails at police, who responded with water cannon and tear gas, broadcaster Vizion Plus and news agency ATA reported.
Police later used water cannon to try to disperse protesters who had moved to the police headquarters and again threw Molotov cocktails, according to the reports.
Several protesters were detained and at least 12 police were injured. There was no immediate information about how many protesters were hurt.
Opposition groups accuse Rama and his Socialist government of corruption and election fraud, and have for months been calling for him to step down.
In February, over 60 lawmakers from the opposition Conservative Democratic Party (DP) and its allies resigned from the parliament in protest.
