OUAGADOUGOU, Nov 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) called on Burkina Faso leaders to conduct a “thorough, independent and transparent” investigation into the recent massacre that killed at least 70 people.
The OHCHR Office in Burkina Faso commented that it is difficult to access the area where the massacre occurred as well as contact witnesses and survivors for security reasons.
According to an interim report released by Burkina Faso prosecutors on Nov 13, at least 70 people, mostly children and the elderly, were killed in the Nov 5 massacre in the village of Zaongo, East North of this country. Burkina Faso authorities are still looking for the culprit. The European Union (EU) and the US have also requested an investigation into the incident.
OHCHR quoted several sources as saying that about 100 people may have been killed and many others injured. Many properties were also burned and villagers had to flee the area.
According to OHCHR, those responsible for these actions must be brought to justice in fair and transparent trials, and victims must be compensated.
On the same day, the British non-governmental organization Save the Children also called for an “immediate investigation” into this massacre. — NNN-AGENCIES
