KATHMANDU, Nov 7 (NNN-XINHUA) – Relief materials were sent to quake-hit areas in western Nepal yesterday, while a 5.8-magnitude aftershock was recorded on the day.
The distribution of tents, tarpaulins, blankets, utensils and food, provided by the government and different organisations was going on “in full swing” in Jajarkot district, which was hit by a 6.4-magnitude quake on Friday night, along with Rukum West district, said Harischandra Sharma, Jajarkot’s assistant chief district officer.
A total of 157 people have been confirmed dead, and 349 others injured, by 19:00 local time yesterday, and 17,529 houses have been found partially damaged and 17,792 others fully destroyed, according to the Emergency Operation Centre, under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“It is cold here at night and in the morning, people need warm clothes, more tents and adequate food,” Sharma said. “We need more of such items, and we have been told, more relief is arriving.”
The federal government has decided to provide 50 million Nepali rupees (376,000 U.S. dollars) to Jajarkot and Rukum West, and 200,000 rupees (1,500 dollars) to each of the families losing lives in the quake.
As aftershocks continued, a 5.8-magnitude aftershock occurred around Ramidanda of Jajarkot, the epicentre of the 6.4-magnitude temblor, at 16:31 local time yesterday, according to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.
There were reports about some houses damaged and a few people injured in the aftershock, said Sharma.– NNN-XINHUA
