Main Line Of Bangladesh’s First Metro Launched In Dhaka

DHAKA, Nov 5 (NNN-BSS) – The main line of Bangladesh’s first metro, with 16 elevated stations, began commercial operations yesterday, setting another milestone in the country’s transportation history.

Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, inaugurated the second part of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT Line)-6, which is considered the main line of the metro rail, from Dhaka’s Agargaon to Motijheel area, at a ceremony in the capital.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, a Bangladeshi state-owned enterprise, is behind the 20.1-km metro, with work being carried out by Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Indian and Bangladeshi companies.

Bangladesh borrowed funds from Japan International Cooperation Agency, to finance the metro rail project in stages.

Bangladesh stepped into a speedy electric-commuting era, after the opening of the first phase of MRT Line-6 of the metro from Dhaka’s Uttara to Agargaon area, in Dec last year.– NNN-BSS
