LJUBLJANA/ZAGREB, Nov 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Slovenia is preparing to deal with the risk of floods and landslides, after the country’s Environment Agency warned that heavy rain and strong winds could occur in most areas across the country in coming days.
In a notice posted on its website, the Slovenian Environment Agency forecasts that river water levels will rise sharply. Heavy rain can cause landslides – which has been a risk since the flood in August. Therefore, people living in some villages must prepare to evacuate when necessary. Authorities have also closed some roads to prevent flooding.
Slovenian army and civil protection units have been put on standby.
The above warning was issued less than three months after Slovenia experienced record floods in August, killing six people and causing about 3 billion euros in damage.
* On the same day, the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Agency (DHMZ) issued a red level heavy rain and high wind warning – the highest level on the warning scale – across the country.
DHMZ warns that rain and floods may occur in mountainous areas of Croatia and many other areas. Heavy rain can cause river levels to rise to dangerous levels.
In addition to heavy rain, strong wind gusts of up to 120 km/h are also possible in the country. Authorities advise citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.
This weather pattern is forecast to last until the end of the week. — NNN-AGENCIES
