Road accident kills 5 in southern Zambia
5 people die, 12 injured in Zambia road accident

LUSAKA, Oct 26 (NNN-XINHUA) — Five people were killed and one injured in a road accident on Wednesday in southern Zambia’s Chirundu District, according to the police.

The accident, which involved a truck and a car, occurred when the driver of the car failed to keep to his near side and collided with the oncoming truck, Danny Mwale, deputy spokesperson for the Zambia Police Service, said in a statement.

He said five passengers in the car, including a two-month-old baby, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital, while the driver of the truck escaped with injuries.

The police spokesman added that the car was extensively damaged, while the truck had extensive damage to its front part.

Fatal road accidents, which are common in Zambia, are mainly caused by careless driving, poor road conditions, and overloading. The country recorded 9,888 road accidents in the third quarter of 2023, resulting in 581 deaths and 1,719 serious injuries, according to police figures. — NNN-XINHUA
