COLOMBO, Oct 22 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka’s Excise Department, arrested 28,441 individuals, in the first nine months of this year, over allegations of illegal manufacture, distribution or sale of alcohol, an official said, yesterday.
Additional Commissioner General of Excise (Revenue and Law Enforcement), Kapila Kumarasinghe, told the national television channel that, they carried out 23,493 raids in the above-mentioned period.
The authorities confiscated equipment and machinery used to produce illicit liquor worth 260 million rupees (800,000 U.S. dollars) during the raids.– NNN-XINHUA
