Update: Belgian police shot dead suspect after deadly Brussels shooting

BRUSSELS, Oct 17 (NNN-XINHUA) — The Belgian police on Tuesday shot dead a suspected Tunisian accused of killing two Swedish soccer fans in central Brussels on Monday evening, reported local media.

The suspect was shot in a cafe on Tuesday, and died of wounds in hospital, said the reports.

“The weapon with which the attacks were committed has been found this morning where the man was apprehended,” Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden told VRT broadcaster.

“We are checking fingerprints to be 100 percent sure,” said the minister.

The shooting happened just after 7:00 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) while Belgium was hosting Sweden in a Euro 2024 qualifying match at the King Baudouin Stadium, 4.8 km away from the site.

The match was suspended at halftime because of security reasons. More than 35,000 football fans attending the Belgium-Sweden football match remained inside the stadium until the evacuation began just before midnight. — NNN-XINHUA
