UNITED NATIONS, May 9 (NNN-XINHUA) — Amid repeated UN calling for a Ramadan truce in Libya, at least 12 airstrikes and several fatalities were reported in southern Tripoli, a UN spokesman said.
“We can report that clashes have continued in southern Tripoli despite the UN mission’s call for a week-long humanitarian truce,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The UN mission in Tripoli renewed its call for a humanitarian truce to allow for civilians to move freely and shop during Ramadan and allow unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to those trapped in conflict zones, Dujarric said.
While the spokesman gave no new data on the extent of casualties since the offensive on Tripoli’s outskirts began about one month ago, the last numbers he did report were 23 civilians killed and around 75 injured.
Asked whose aircraft conducted the attacks Monday, Dujarric said, “We do not have any more information.”
“What we do know is that there is an increased level of clashes, air attacks, ground attacks and the end result is that there is increased suffering of Syrian civilians both in terms of increased levels of displacement and destruction of civilian infrastructure,” he said.
The spokesman said the world organization also was extremely concerned about increasing reports of weapons and ammunition being supplied to both parties, in contravention of the relevant Security Council resolutions. — NNN-XINHUA
