TRIPOLI, Oct 8 (NNN-XINHUA) — The International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Saturday urged to immediately scale up donor funding to accelerate recovery efforts in eastern Libya, which was hard hit by deadly floods last month.

The IOM said in a statement that it made the call in order to meet the organization’s estimated need for 22-million-U.S. dollar funding to accelerate early recovery efforts in Libya’s flood-hit areas, noting that “roughly 30 percent of the required funding has been secured.”

The organization also called on all relevant international partners and Libyan authorities to facilitate the formation of a unified national mechanism to direct the recovery and reconstruction efforts, as well as to ensure transparency and accountability based on an objective assessment of the situation and needs on the ground.

The IOM added that shelter, water, sanitation, and mental health and psychosocial support continue to be the priority needs in these areas.

On Sept. 10, Mediterranean storm Daniel triggered Libya’s worst floods in decades, killing thousands of people and causing widespread damage to the area’s infrastructure. — NNN-XINHUA
