Italian embassy in Caracas takes in opposition MP

CARACAS, May 8 (NNN-ANSA) — Mariela Magallanes, a Venezuelan opposition MP, has been taken in at the residence of the Italian ambassador in Caracas, the Italian foreign ministry in Rome said on Wednesday.

Magallanes is one of seven members of the opposition-led National Assembly (AN) to have had their parliamentary immunity lifted by the Constituent National Assembly (ANC) for alleged involvement in the failed coup of April 30.

Magallanes is married to an Italian and is in the process of obtaining Italian citizenship.

In a statement, Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi “firmly condemned” the lifting of the lawmakers’ immunity.

“Such repressive acts do not help the search for a democratic, peaceful solution,” Moavero said.
