Over 50 Injured In Protest In Manipur Following Killing Of Students

NEW DELHI, Sept 27 (NNN-PTI) – Over 50 students were injured yesterday, during massive protests against the killing of two students, in Manipur, local media reports, said.

According to officials yesterday, hundreds of students in Imphal took to the streets to protest against the murder of two students by suspected armed men, demanding justice for the victims.

Government forces used tear gas and smoke bombs, and resorted to baton charging to disperse the crowd. The police action left dozens of protesters injured, who were rushed to the hospital.

The protests were triggered, after photos of the bodies of a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man surfaced on social media. The students went missing in July, during the peak of ethnic violence in the state.

The Manipur government has asked people to exercise restraint and allow authorities to investigate the killing of the duo.

In a statement issued by the secretariat of the chief minister, late on Monday night, the state government said, the case has already been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).– NNN-PTI
