GUSAU (Zamfara, Nigeria), Sept 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Gusau Federal University in Zamfara state, northwestern Nigeria, announced that 16 students and staff had been released after they were kidnapped by gunmen in an attack on the school on Sept 22.

In a statement, Gusau Federal University emphasized that the attack had made students at the school worried about their safety. Security agencies are making every effort to rescue the kidnapped students and individuals.

Currently, 14 students and 2 staff members have been released. Therefore, the school management calls on students and staff at the school to stay calm and continue to carry out activities as usual.

Currently, the army, police and state security agencies are conducting a rescue operation for the remaining victims.

On Sept 22, armed gunmen broke into Gusau school, kidnapping dozens of students and staff there. Two days later, other gunmen killed eight people and kidnapped at least 60 others in two communities also in Zamfara state.

The attacks in Nigeria’s northwestern region are part of widespread unrest in the country, with rebel attacks causing casualties in the country’s northeastern region.

In the Southeast, criminal gangs and separatists attacked security forces and government buildings, while clashes involving farmers and nomadic herders continued to claim lives of thousands of people. — NNN-AGENCIES
