LIMA, Sept 26 (NNN-ANDINA) — Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi on Monday affirmed that there is a national effort to complete Peru’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), noting that the Government has set the goal of joining such organization in 2026.

“The Government has set the goal of meeting the requirements to join the organization by 2026, and national institutions, which have been making every effort for this purpose, are committed to said goal,” she said in statements to Andina news agency.

However, the government official acknowledged that this is a very dynamic process, whose deadline will depend on both the country’s progress in meeting the requirements set by the OECD, as well as its availability, taking into consideration that five countries are been assessed at the same time —a never-before-seen scenario.

“I am sure that Peru is moving forward at a steady pace to complete the process in the expected time frame,” she said.

Minister Gervasi explained that the OECD sets the highest standards, noting that if Peru manages to join this organization as a member country, it will have a kind of “certification” for effective management of public policies and the economy, which will reinforce the country’s image as a reliable partner and will attract sustainable investments.

Furthermore, she highlighted that within the context of the accession process, the Peruvian State will witness further strengthening of institutions, which will allow for bridging social gaps and access to better basic services, for the benefit of the population.

“In order to become a member of the OECD, Peru must undertake substantive management and public policy reforms, based on the high standards set by the organization,” the Cabinet member stated.

On the other hand, she underscored that the OECD is an organization at the forefront of governance, environmental management, science, technology and innovation, among other relevant aspects.

Gervasi said that OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann, will arrive in Peru on Tuesday, noting that his visit shows the support for Peru as a reliable partner.

The visit of the OECD Secretary-General, Mathias Cormann, to our country, which will take place between September 26 and 28, is of the greatest relevance and significance because it reflects the support of the organization and its member countries for Peru’s accession process,” she said.

During his stay in Peru, the OECD Secretary-General will be accompanied by a delegation with which he will present an economic study on Peru —conducted by the organization— and will provide an overall assessment of Peru’s progress in its accession process.

“The visit of the OECD’s highest authority will be an opportunity to inform citizens of the opportunities and challenges of the accession process, which is beneficial in itself,” Minister Gervasi remarked. — NNN-ANDINA
