Peru: President announces about US$14.5 million to fight crime

LIMA, Sept 24 (NNN-ANDINA) — In a meeting with mayors of the areas in which a state of emergency has been declared to fight citizen insecurity, Pres Dina Boluarte announced that S/54.5 million (around US$14.5 million) will be allocated for prevention works, enhancement of police work, and administration of justice.

“S/15 million (around US/4 million) will be allocated for municipalities. Mayors know the critical points where lighting, video surveillance cameras, and integrated patrol systems must be installed,” she said.

Additionally, S/19 million (around US$5 million) will be allocated to enhance police work, of which S/8 million (around US$2.14 million) will go to the Ministry of Interior to implement a special anti-crime brigade in the province of Sullana (Piura region) and another four in Lima, specifically in San Juan de Lurigancho and San Martin de Porres districts.

Likewise, S/1.5 million (around US$400,000) will be allocated to improve security at Lurigancho and Miguel Castro Castro prisons, in order to prevent the planning of crimes from inside.

Furthermore, another S/19 million (around US$5 million) will be allocated to create 5 Criminal Flagrancy Units in the province of Sullana, four in San Juan de Lurigancho, and two in San Martin de Porres. 

After urging mayors to use the aforementioned resources transparently, the dignitary affirmed that these actions demonstrate her commitment to safeguarding the lives and safety of Peruvians.

Held at the Government Palace, the meeting also featured Prime Minister Alberto Otarola, as well as Ministers Alex Contreras (Economy and Finance), Vicente Romero (Interior), and Jorge Luis Chavez (Defense). 

Also present were mayors Jesus Maldonado of San Juan de Lurigancho and Hernan Sifuentes of San Martin de Porres, in Lima; Marcelino Mogollon of the province of Sullana, as well as district mayors of Bellavista, Marcavelica, Querecotillo, Miguel Checa, Ignacio Escudero, and Salitral, in the province of Sullana.

The local authorities noted that the state of emergency declared by the Government in their respective jurisdictions will allow them to join forces in favor of citizen security. — NNN-ANDINA
