Myanmar Exports Over 100,000 Tonnes Of Pigeon Peas In Over Five Months

YANGON, Sept 23 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar exported over 105,043 tonnes of pigeon peas (Arhar Dal/Tur Dal) in the first five months of the 2023-24 fiscal year, through next March, according to the country’s Ministry of Commerce, yesterday.

From Apr 1 to Sept 15 this year, the country earned over 91.92 million U.S. dollars from the export of pigeon peas, showed the ministry’s figures. Myanmar’s total export of beans and pulses, including pigeon peas during the cited period reached over 790,888 tonnes.

According to Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association, the majority of pigeon peas plantations in Myanmar are in Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway regions.

The country annually produces over 400,000 tonnes of pigeon peas, and about 200,000 tonnes of them are exported to foreign markets, it said. Myanmar mainly exports its pigeon peas to India, along with Pakistan, Singapore, China and Bangladesh.

In the 2022-23 fiscal year, Myanmar exported over 239,537 tonnes of pigeon peas and earned over 187.39 million dollars from the export, the ministry’s figures showed.

Beans and pulses are Myanmar’s second-most cultivated crops after rice, accounting for over 30 percent of the country’s total agricultural production.– NNN-MNA
