Summer road accidents in Cuba result in 72 deaths, 543 injured

HAVANA, Sept 10 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Cuba reported more than 1,000 traffic accidents during the summer, as a result of which 72 people were killed and 543 were injured.

In areas intended for recreation, 44 incidents occurred, with 42 minor injuries: in Havana 30, Camagüey four, Pinar del Río five, Las Tunas and Sancti Spíritus two each, and in Holguín one, according to information from the Specialized Traffic Body of the General Directorate of the National Revolutionary Police, quoted by the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

Among the main violations were speeding, distractions, right of way, technical malfunctions and lack of protective helmets and seat belts.

The Cuban police imposed sanctions during the summer period due to indisciplines on drivers without a license, not having the official transportation authorization, illegal movement of passengers and loose animals on the roads, among others.

Sixty-four mobile breathalyzer points were implemented, where 4,110 tests were done and 252 of them were positive, which led to the withdrawal of the corresponding license.

During the summer season, Cuba took promotional and propaganda actions in relation to the consumption of alcoholic beverages, road indiscipline and a responsible attitude at the wheel. — NNN-ACN
