One Killed, Five Injured After Car Hit Pedestrians, Vehicles In Melbourne

SYDNEY, Sept 9 (NNN-AAP) — Police in the Australian state of Victoria, confirmed that one person was killed yesterday with five others injured, after a car crashed into pedestrians and then hit two other vehicles in Melbourne’s central business area.

Speaking at a press conference last night, Victoria Police Superintendent, Zorka Dunstan, said that, at about 6:20 p.m. local time, a white Toyota sedan struck three pedestrians at a tram stop, when travelling east on Bourke Street, near the corner of Swanston Street.

The driver then continued and slammed into two other vehicles, a Hyundai and a Mazda, at the intersection of Bourke Street and Russell Street.

According to Dunstan, the driver of the Hyundai died as a result of the crash. Three pedestrians and two occupants of the Mazda have been transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Police arrested the offender, a 26-year-old man from Melton West, at the scene, who is currently remaining in custody and undergoing a mental health assessment.

Dunstan assured local communities that, there is no ongoing threat and the area will remain closed while the investigation continues.

“At this early stage, there is nothing to suggest any terror links,” said the police official.– NNN-AAP
