LIMA, Aug 26 (NNN-ANDINA) — With a total of 216,000 tons in the 2022-2023 season, Peru ranks as the ninth-largest producer of arabica coffee worldwide, as announced by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PromPeru) on Peruvian Coffee Day —celebrated every fourth Friday of August.
This species is considered the best and is the most cultivated in Peru and around the world.
It is mainly exported as green or roasted beans and stands out for its flavor, body, and aroma.
Currently, Peru hosts more than 660,000 hectares of coffee, with over 236,000 producers involved, meaning that close to one million families depend on its cultivation.
Its production occurs in 11 regions, with concentrations in San Martin, Junin, Cajamarca, Amazonas, and Cusco regions.
Peru is currently the leading global exporter and producer of organic coffee alongside Ethiopia. 95% of it is cultivated by small farmers, and our country holds 48.1% of the certified area in Latin America.
Peru is also known for its highly regarded specialty coffees in the international market due to their fragrance, flavor, aroma, and body, among other attributes. Exports Coffee exports in 2022 amounted to US$1.236 billion, a 37.8% increase compared to the previous year.
The main destination markets were the United States, Germany, Belgium, Colombia, and Sweden.
PromPeru is promoting Peruvian coffee through various commercial platforms worldwide under the brand “Cafés del Perú” (Coffees from Peru), which seeks to distinguish this product through its diversity, specialty, and origin.
This year, producers and entrepreneurs from the sector participated in the Specialty Coffee Expo in the United States and the World of Coffee in Europe, and will also be present at the upcoming World Specialty Coffee Conference & Exhibition in Japan —specialized fairs with excellent business projections.
Additionally, Peruvian coffee has been showcased at other international events dedicated to food and beverages and has been recognized at prestigious global competitions.
PromPeru is collaborating with other governmental, private, and international cooperation entities such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO), and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) in the Peruvian Coffee National Plan 2018-2030, with the aim of improving competitiveness levels, as well as the social and environmental sustainability of this product’s value chain.
Through these efforts, the goal is to enhance the positioning and commercialization of Peruvian coffee in both the domestic and international markets. — NNN-ANDINA
