Peru’s Finance Ministry: New competitiveness plan to be launched in September

LIMA, Aug 25 (NNN-ANDINA) — Economy and Finance Minister Alex Contreras has announced that the new competitiveness plan, prepared by the national government, will be launched next September.

We hope to launch the competitiveness plan by the end of September, at the latest, because there is a reassessment; without any doubt, one of the major components is sustainability,” Contreras said.

“As the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), we reaffirm our commitment to sustainability, because we have a competitiveness plan and an infrastructure plan that are sustainable, he added.

The 2019-2023 National Competitiveness and Productivity Plan is currently in force, which contains 84 specific short-, medium-, and long-term measures to sustainably increase the well-being of all Peruvian citizens.

During the presentation of the Hoja de Ruta de Finanzas Verdes para el Perú (Green Finance Roadmap for Peru), held by the Ministry of Environment last Tuesday, Minister Contreras explained that said document promotes a sustainable economy in Peru, through the financing of projects that are friendly to natural resources.

“This is a measure which is (included) in the competitiveness plan, because a country that aspires to become competitive must have a sustainable economy that respects the environment. That is the major challenge not only faced by Peru but also by Latin America and the world, Contreras indicated.

“Fiscal space is limited; that is why the great change will emerge from the role that the private sector can play and the articulation capacity that we can have from the (Peruvian) State,” he added.

The minister explained that the Green Finance Roadmap for Peru will be an important instrument for the investment system and will facilitate the gradual incorporation of sustainable criteria in the operations by financial system entities to accelerate the transition and growth towards a green economy in Peru.

“Without a doubt, relying on a Green Finance Roadmap, with mechanisms that contribute to granting sustainability, as well as boosting infrastructure and projects that can be friendly to the environment, will be essential in the medium term,” he indicated.

The Green Finance Roadmap —approved by Supreme Decree No. 007-2023-Minam— involves intermediary financial entities, insurers, and pension funds (regulated and supervised by the Stock Market Superintendence).

It also incorporates development banking and non-supervised financial institutions that seek to improve their social, environmental, and economic impacts. — NNN-ANDINA
