SYDNEY, Aug 24 (NNN-AAP) – Researchers from Australia’s RMIT University, found that, roasted coffee grounds can be used to produce stronger concrete.
A team of researchers from the School of Engineering of RMIT University, has developed a technique to produce concrete 30 percent stronger, by turning waste coffee grounds into biochar, using a low-energy process without oxygen at 350 degrees Celsius, the university said, in a press release yesterday.
Published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, the finding is the first to prove that waste coffee grounds can be used to improve concrete, said the release.
Australia generates 75 million kg of ground coffee waste every year – most of it goes to landfills. Globally, 10 billion kg of spent coffee is generated annually.– NNN-AAP
