Peru: Cancosani village in Arequipa affected by ash and gases from Ubinas Volcano

SAN JUAN de TARUCANI (Arequipa region, Peru), Aug 23 (NNN-ANDINA) — Settlers in the village of Cancosani, in Arequipa region, have been the most affected by the cloud of gases and ash emitted by Ubinas Volcano, San Juan de Tarucani District Mayor Floro Choque reported.

The local authority stated that nearly 37 families reside in Cancosani, a village about 4 kilometers from the volcano.
People in Cancosani are the most affected by Ubinas’ eruptive activity, due to the village’s location.

For this reason, the settlers requested KN-95 face masks and special glasses to protect themselves from ash and gases to the Arequipa Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER-Arequipa).

“There was an explosion on Aug 21, so ash and gases spread towards the district of Juan de Tarucani. The entire jurisdiction was affected, mainly the population of Cancosani, because of its proximity,” Floro Choque stated.

The mayor, who arrived in the city of Arequipa to request the face masks and glasses to COER, affirmed that the petition was duly justified.

San Juan de Tarucani’s top official remarked that the alpaca population was also affected by the cloud of ash, which covers the fields and water deposits, so he requested COER’s support to assist the farming sector.

San Juan de Tarucani district’s authorities continue to assess the damage caused by Ubinas’ eruptive activity in order to assist the population in a timely manner. — NNN-ANDINA
