Countdown Begins For Indian Moon Mission’s Landing

NEW DELHI, Aug 23 (NNN-PTI) – The Indian scientific community and the public, are eagerly awaiting for the soft landing of the country’s Moon Mission-3, or Chandrayaan-3, on the moon today, as the Lander module is said to be functioning well.

The moon mission’s Lander module is scheduled to make a soft landing on the lunar surface at 18:04 (Indian Standard Time) today.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, will be virtually watching from Johannesburg, the live telecast of the historic event arranged by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Modi is in Johannesburg, South Africa, to attend the 15th BRICS Summit.

“The mission is on schedule. Systems are undergoing regular checks. Smooth sailing is continuing. The Mission Operations Complex (MOX) is buzzed with energy and excitement!” the ISRO tweeted, yesterday.

The Indian space agency also posted images of the moon, captured by the Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC), from an altitude of about 70 km from the moon.

“The LPDC images assist the Lander Module in determining its position (latitude and longitude) by matching them against an onboard moon reference map,” added the ISRO.– NNN-PTI
