Algerians take to streets as political stalemate continues

ALGIERS, May 4 (NNN-Xinhua) — Hundreds of thousands of Algerians took to the streets across the country for the 11th consecutive Friday to demand the departure of the regime.

The marches staged across the country were once again calm and without major incidents.

On the one hand, the opposition parties and national personalities demand that all individuals representing the old system should leave power, and a transition period led by new faces before a presidential election to be held.

On the other hand, the Interim President Abdelkader Bensalah as well as the military institution want to comply with the constitution, as they insist on holding the presidential election on July 4.

The protesters are waiting for new measures that would meet their claims, as they vowed to keep on marching every Friday until real change occurs.

This mass popular movement erupted in Feb. 22 when Algerians opposed the candidacy of Abdelaziz Bouteflika for his fifth presidential term.

On April 2, Bouteflika, under pressure from the street, announced his resignation.

Less than a week later, Abdelkader Bensalah, speaker of the Council of the Nation (upper house of parliament), was appointed interim president for 90 days as stipulated by the constitution.
