TEHRAN, Aug 20 (NNN-IRNA) – Speedboats of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy, can sail at a maximum speed of 90-110 knots (about 166-203 km per hour).
Commander of the IRGC Navy, Alireza Tangsiri, made the remarks at a gathering of the forces’ commanders in the Iranian capital, Tehran, while elaborating on achievements in Iran’s naval defence industry, said the report.
Tangsiri said, the speed increase follows a directive of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, adding that, the IRGC Navy is currently dominant over the waters on both sides of the Strait of Hormuz, and any vessel, even the U.S. aircraft and helicopter cruisers, have to abide by Iran’s rules, when navigating through these waters.
The IRGC Navy commander noted that, his force also possesses different kinds of combat, reconnaissance and hybrid drones and is prepared to equip with surface-to-sea missiles.
He said, the IRGC Navy can install rocket launchers on 8-metre speedboats, emphasising that, Iran is the first country in West Asia to have built a vessel with a runway for drones’ takeoff and landing.
Over the past weeks, the United States has been building up its military presence in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz, on the pretext of protecting ships against Iran’s “harassment,” a claim strongly rejected by Iranian authorities, who say, transregional troops’ presence in the region only leads to insecurity and instability.– NNN-IRNA
