TEHRAN, Aug 18 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, said yesterday, the country’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) is the world’s biggest anti-terrorism organisation.
The remarks, published on the leader’s website, were made at a meeting with the IRGC commanders and officials, in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
He praised the military force for its achievements and significant role in ensuring national and regional security, and condemned efforts by some Western countries to tarnish its image.
The top leader added that, the IRGC is a “well-equipped, efficient and independent military organisation, capable of doing things that many of the world’s great armies are incapable of.”
In Apr, 2019, the United States designated the IRGC as a “foreign terrorist organisation,” a move strongly condemned by Iran.
In Jan this year, a draft resolution was approved in the European Parliament, calling on “the European Union and its member states, to include the IRGC in the EU’s terror list.”
In addition, over the past months, the United States and the EU have both imposed sanctions on individuals and institutions affiliated with the IRGC, accusing them of “human rights violations in Iran” and “supporting Russia in the war with Ukraine through providing it with Iranian drones.”
Iranian officials have repeatedly rejected the accusations as “baseless,” highlighting the IRGC’s role in the fight against terrorism in the region.
In response to the sanctions, Iran has also slapped retaliatory sanctions against some European and U.S. officials.– NNN-IRNA
