JAKARTA, Aug 16 (NNN-Bernama) — Indonesian President Joko Widodo said the country can grow to be among the world’s top five economies by 2045 by capitalising on its demographic advantages and international trust.
“We need to make the most of this opportunity. If we miss it, it could be a big loss because not all countries have this opportunity, and it may not come again,” he said in his annual speech to the People’s Consultative Assembly and Parliament here Wednesday.
The leader, affectionately known as Jokowi, said the demographic bonus, peaking in the 2030s, where 68 per cent of the population is of working age, is a key factor in increasing the country’s productivity.
He highlighted the importance of other countries trusting Indonesia in global relations, stating that it increases credibility and respect, as well as leads to a stronger global voice and easier negotiations.
Indonesia’s role in organisations such as the G20 and ASEAN, its commitment to human rights, and its success in addressing global challenges have enhanced its global standing, he added.
Jokowi pointed out that the country is actively developing new economic sectors that create job opportunities, especially in the green economy and downstream industries.
As the country enters a political year with the upcoming presidential election in February 2024, he emphasised: “Indonesia’s future depends greatly on the new leadership.”
The leader also clarified that he is not leading any political party or coalition, so he can’t control the selection of presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
Touching on political campaigns on social media, Jokowi expressed sadness about the emergence of “cultural pollution” due to the decline in social politeness and moral values.
Instead of using freedom and democracy to express hatred and spread slander, he stressed the need for all parties to unite in preserving public morals and support the country’s progress.
