Typhoon Lan Heads To Western Japan, Holiday Travel Affected

TOKYO, Aug 15 (NNN-NHK) – A powerful typhoon remains on course to make landfall on the Pacific coast of western Japan today, affecting many people, during Japan’s annual Bon holidays, according to the weather agency and transport operators, yesterday.

Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) advised people in both eastern and western Japan, to pay close attention to landslide disasters, flooding and strong winds in its latest report, warning that, the risk of heavy rain disasters will increase sharply.

As of 10:00 p.m. local time, last night, Lan, the seventh typhoon of the year, is located south-east of Cape Shionomisaki in Wakayama Prefecture, and is moving north-west at a speed of about 10 km per hour.

According to the agency, Typhoon Lan is likely to approach the Tokai region from the Kinki region and make landfall today, then move north over the Sea of Japan to approach the Hokkaido region, from tomorrow to Thursday.

As Japan braces for the arrival of the powerful typhoon, some shinkansen bullet train services and flights are set to be cancelled, despite the travel rush during the country’s Bon holidays.

Airline operators also decided to ground some flights due to the storm, with All Nippon Airways announcing that 310 flights will be cancelled today, with most, to and from Itami airport.

Japan’s well-known theme park in Osaka, Universal Studios, will also be closed today, according to the operator.– NNN-NHK
