KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysian Unity Government is determined to continue working diligently to fulfil the needs of the people as expressed by the results of the six state elections and the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election Saturday, said Anwar Ibrahim.
The Malaysian prime minister said his administration would stay strong in line with the aspiration to develop Malaysia MADANI and the MADANI Economy policy.
“Insya-Allah, this Monday we will continue working, not only as usual but even harder so that Malaysia can achieve success we can be proud of,” he told a media conference at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here Saturday night.
He was speaking after the announcement of the polls results, which saw the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-Barisan Nasional (BN) alliance winning in states of Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other top leaders of the Unity Government.
At the same time, Anwar said the government respected the results in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, which saw Perikatan Nasional (PN) retaining power in these states.
The prime minister said the Unity Government’s success in retaining power in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang was the result of cooperation among component parties, including from Sabah and Sarawak which have also given their support.
Anwar said the poll’s outcome was an expression of the people’s decision in the country’s democratic system and it should be respected and accepted.
“If there are problems and protests, raise them through the proper channel, law and regulation as provided by the Election Commission (EC),” he added.
Anwar also reminded all parties, both the winners and losers, to maintain goodwill in preserving the country’s peace and to focus on upholding the country’s dignity and protecting the people’s well-being.
He also expressed his appreciation to EC workers for doing a good job and the police for helping to ensure a smooth conduct of the polls.
In the Kuala Terengganu by-election, the Malaysian Islamic Pary (PAS) central working committee member Ahmad Amzad Hashim retained the seat by defeating PH’s Azan Ismail with a majority of 47,266 votes.
