TOKYO (Japan), Aug 11 (NNN-ANDINA) — With great enthusiasm, Japanese media announced the presence of Satsuma mandarins imported from Peru on the shelves of some supermarkets in the Asian country.

The introduction of this fruit to the Nipponese market holds a special significance, as it was in 1940 that Japanese immigrants incorporated it into Peruvian agriculture.

Local supermarkets promote the presence of these mandarins as a “Homecoming from the Land of the Sun!”referring to the origin of this citrus variety and its connection to Japanese ancestors who contributed to its cultivation in Peru.

The importing company’s director, Jun Mukoyama, expressed his satisfaction in being able to offer Japanese consumers “mandarins from the other side of the world, which can be deliciously enjoyed during the summer.”

In turn, Koji Murakami, in charge of citrus for the same brandhighlighted the difference in mandarin cultivation between Peru and Japan, mentioning that “the cultivation technology is more advanced than expected, which has enabled this fruit to become very popular (…).”

In Japan, consumer demand for quality is high, resulting in strict control over additives and preservatives used to withstand long journeys. However, Japanese importers expressed satisfaction with the quality and safety of Peruvian mandarins, emphasizing cooperation with Peruvian entrepreneurs throughout the process.

“This is a product that meets the needs and safety standards of the Japanese, and we can confidently say, ‘This is mandarin,'” Mukoyama concluded.

According to Peru’s Commission for Promotion of Export and Tourism (PromPeru)Peruvian exports of tangerines and Satsuma mandarins to the world amounted to over US$33.4 million in 2022, with the main destinations being the United States and the United Kingdom.

The presence of Peruvian mandarins in Japan is a significant achievement and proves the potential of our biodiversity to conquer new international markets.

PromPeru will continue to work closely with the sector to boost export growth and establish Peru as a reliable supplier of high-quality products in the global arena. — NNN-ANDINA
