BELEM do PARA (Brazil), Aug 9 (NNN-ANDINA) — Before dignitaries participating in the Amazon Summit, Peruvian Pres Dina Boluarte proposed promoting the comprehensive, inclusive, and sustainable development of this region, plus a firm and clear alliance to stop environmental crimes that destroy it.

“I (have) come with the conviction that the Amazonia means not only the world’s lungs, but also the planet’s heart,” she said.

Boluarte attended the Fourth Meeting of Heads of State and Government of Countries Signatory to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT) in Belem do Para—led by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The Peruvian Head of State indicated that the Amazonia is home to almost 5 million Peruvian and 50 million South American citizens.

Thus, the priority must be to respond to the well-being needs of citizens, especially native and original communities who inhabit this region.

During her speech, the president proposed an Amazonia with human face —one that develops public policies involving every level of government, recognizes the potential of the activities held in this region, promotes (public) infrastructure works and joint actions to protect people and organizations that defend human rights and the environment.

Similarly, she called for the culture and identity of indigenous peoples and local communities to be recognized.

“An Amazon with a human face means that the Amazonian region, a sovereign territory of our eight countries, shall be recognized as a source of life for all humanity,” she noted.

Within this framework, the Head of State proposed to the leaders participating in the Amazon Summit a firm and clear alliance to stop environmental crimes, namely illegal logging and mining; drug and species trafficking; and pollution that destroy the Amazonia.

“As the first woman, who assumed the Presidency of the republic, I have come to defend our Amazonia and boost its comprehensive, inclusive, and sustainable development,” Boluarte stated.

We hope that this summit will send a clear message to the world: we, the Amazonian countries, fully assume our sovereign responsibility, but we need the active and concrete support from the international community to overcome our challenges,” she added.

Finally, Peru’s top official invited Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to visit Peru soon, to further deepen integration and transform the governance of the Amazonia. — NNN-ANDINA
