American Association of Jurists Recognizes Lula as Political Prisoner

BRASILIA, May 4 (NNN-Prensa Latina) The American Association of Jurists (AAJ) recognized in a statement the ex-Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as a political prisoner and this Friday joins the international campaign for his immediate release.

A non-governmental organization with consultative status in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, the AAJ denounced last year the persecution against the former worker leader during the General Assembly of the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

This is the first time, however, that it officially classifies Lula as a political prisoner.

The communication highlights that Lula left his government (2003-2011) with more than 80 percent popularity and in 2018 he was not only prevented from running for the presidency, but also prohibited from giving interviews or demonstrating publicly.

The document also criticizes the violation of the constitutional precept of the presumption of innocence until the final trial.

For the association, it has been demonstrated that the prison was politically motivated, unrelated to the crime for which he was accused and whose punishment is intended to ‘remove the public figure of Lula da Silva from the national political process’.
