Anti-crime dragnet at Brazilian favela leaves eight dead

SAO PAULO, Aug 1 (NNN-XINHUA) — At least eight people were killed and several others were arrested in a series of anti-crime operations over the weekend in southeast Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, authorities said.

The dragnet was launched on Saturday, after a police officer was killed in a shootout Thursday at a favela in Guaruja, a popular tourism destination in Sao Paulo state, Governor Tarcisio Gomes de Freitas said at a press conference.

The dragnet continued on Monday in Guaruja, one of the country’s busiest seaside resorts.

“We are going to continue the operations against organized crime and drug trafficking,” said Gomes de Freitas.

A higher death toll previously reported by Sao Paulo police was incorrect, said Gomes de Freitas, adding that all deaths would be investigated. — NNN-XINHUA
