LIMA, July 26 (NNN-ANDINA) — Economy and Finance Minister Alex Contreras announced that he will meet with private sector guilds to relaunch the national competitiveness agenda with the aim of further boosting the Peruvian economy.
“Therefore, I am going to meet with the representatives of the private sector to, indeed, rethink this competitiveness agenda for the following years,” he announced last Monday.
The Cabinet member said that, according to Nobel Prize laureate in Economics Robert Solow (1987) and Paul Romer (2018), competitiveness has a significant impact on boosting economic growth in a country.
“Competitiveness can successively drive growth. Investment is very important in capital, in human capital; nonetheless, competitiveness is a factor that can make a difference,” he emphasized.
Contreras indicated that competitiveness is essential in an economy, because in order to achieve growth it is not (only) about investing more, but also about how to be more efficient with the available resources.
“In the case of Peru, there is still an important competitiveness agenda. The most competitive country in the world is Denmark, with an overall score of 100,” he noted.
“In the case of Peru, we are in the middle of the chart; we are ranked 55th, with a score of 48,” he detailed via #MEFenvivo program, broadcast via the ministry’s social media channels.
Minister Contreras stressed that the Peruvian economy’s main bulwark is its economic performance with macroeconomic stability.
Nonetheless, the government official warned that there is still a pending agenda to work on with regard to government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure.
“We are taking measures to reactivate the economy, but we also need urgent measures to make progress in terms of competitiveness,” he pointed out. — NNN-ANDINA
