ATHENS, July 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least two people have died after part of a under-construction bridge collapsed on a motorway in western Greece, it has been reported.

Footage shared on social media shows rescuers at the scene of the incident in the city of Patras, near a Roma settlement in the Haradro area.

Reports from local media state a group of Roma were under the bridge, seeking shelter from the heat, when the construction fell on them.

There are fears a number of people are trapped under the large slabs of concrete.

“We can confirm that the bridge collapsed. We are operating at the scene. There are people trapped but we don’t know the exact number,” the fire brigade said.

Rescue efforts are ongoing and dozens of firefighters can be seen sifting through the rubble.

Several ambulances are already at the scene, while firefighters and police officers have been deployed from Athens to help.

The bridge located at the entrance to the Ring Road has been under construction for two years.

It remains unclear how the incident happened. — NNN-AGENCIES
