AREQUIPA (Peru), July 24 (NNN-ANDINA) — The ash and gases emitted by the Ubinas Volcano —located in Peru’s southern Sanchez Cerro province, Moquegua region— since the early hours of Sunday have been blown by winds towards the west, heading to the province of Arequipa, in southern Peru.
These emissions are affecting the district of San Juan de Tarucani and those within its metropolitan area, the National Volcanological Center of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) has reported.
The continuous ash emissions began at 07:10 a.m. and spread over a 40-km radius.
According to the IGP, the ash can cause environmental issues and affected the health of the people.
Therefore, locals are recommended to wear protective glasses and face masks to avoid damage to the respiratory system.
Likewise, the geophysical institute states that competent authorities and institutions should permanently monitor the impact of ash on water, soil, air, and people’s health.
In June, the Ubinas Volcano entered a new eruptive stage featuring successive explosions and ash emission, which prompted the declaration of an orange alert in the area.
As the explosions grew stronger, the Government declared a state of emergency in the zone. — NNN-ANDINA
