PORTLAND (Oregon, US), July 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A security guard was fatally shot inside a Northwest Portland hospital Saturday morning, and police say the accused shooter was killed during a traffic stop in Gresham later that afternoon.

Officers were called out just before 11 a.m. on reports of someone seen with a gun inside Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital, near the intersection of Northwest 22nd Avenue and Lovejoy Street.

When police arrived, security told police that shots were fired on the 5th floor of the hospital near the birthing center.

A security guard, later identified as Bobby Smallwood, was rushed to a Level 1 Trauma Center. He died of his injuries.

“Words cannot express the profound grief we are experiencing,” said Kathryn Correia, Legacy Health president and CEO. “We offer our unwavering support to Bobby’s loved ones, to our patients in our care, to the staff at Legacy Good Samaritan and to all of our employees and providers suffering today.”

Another staff member was injured in the shooting and is in stable condition. Officials said no patients were physically hurt.

The suspect took off in a car after the shooting. Police fanned out in the surrounding area to search for him.

Later that afternoon, East Precinct and Gresham Police officers found the suspect’s vehicle near Northeast 181st Avenue and Everett Street and pulled him over.

Law enforcement officers fired their guns during the traffic stop. The suspect died, and no officers were hurt.

The hospital was put into a shelter-in-place after the initial shooting. The hospital’s emergency protocols have since been lifted.

Legacy said it will offer counseling support services to employees as they work to process the incident. — NNN-AGENCIES
